My Favourite Childhood Books – At The Moment Anyway…

I have to admit that one of the nicest, unexpected joys of being a new Mum has been rekindling my love of my favourite childhood books. Luckily for me, my parents were extremely future-focused all those years ago and kept all of our kids books. It was a great joy sitting down at 37 weeks pregnant and rediscovering the stories that had captured my imagination as a child. It’s an even greater joy not only to be able to share these stories with my son but also to be able to read to him from the same copy that was read to me when I was a child…precious!

A love of reading is something that I am looking forward to sharing…

What has now become something of a guilty pleasure is trolling through the Book Depository or Amazon looking for cherished titles to add to our growing collection. More than a few hours have been lost discovering what’s new in the world of children’s fiction – the Hippopotamus is now eating cake all over the place, the Hungry Little Caterpillar has befriended a very Busy Spider and a Grouchy Ladybug and Hairy Maclary has wonderful friends like Schnitzel von Krumm, Slinky Malinki and Zachary Quack.

So I thought I’d share my Top 10 children’s books (for the time being) that I’ve been enjoying over the last few months….

  1. Possum Magic (Mem Fox)
  2. Each, Peach, Pear, Plum (Janet & Allan Ahlberg)
  3. The Very Hungry Caterpillar (Eric Carle)
  4. Meg and Mog (Helen Nicoll)
  5. Hairy Maclary (Lynley Dodd)
  6. Koala Lou (Mem Fox)
  7. Who Sank the Boat? (Pamela Allen)
  8. There’s a Hippopotamus on our Roof Eating Cake (Hazel Edwards)
  9. Where the Wild Things Are (Maurice Sendak)
  10. Time for Bed (Mem Fox)

I’d love to hear what your favourites are – it’s always great to hear what other people enjoy!
